We have been blessed as a nation to have had many, many women who have made tremendous contributions to our nation and most go unnamed. Thank you for sharing this memory of a remarkable lady who served her nation through out her life.
Thank you Tara. I knew of Harriet Lane but I didn't know much other than that she filled in as first lady for President James Buchanan. You, of course, changed my knowledge - as usual.
Ms. Lane must have been a very remarkable woman, generous, brave and loved by many. Her ability to keep going after losing her children and her husband is also remarkable. Her generosity to children's medical care is remarkable as well.
She must have made President Buchanan very happy as she owed much to him for the love and care that he provided to her and her sister.
Did not know that any women served as First Lady’s without having been married to the President. Her service to the Country must have made the President proud and certainly relieved him in the area of her assistance. Her perseverance in the tragic events of her own family is a testimony to her strength of character.
Great story. I learn something new EVERY time I read this in the morning. Tara, more work for you to put together yet another book . . . “First Ladies of the Land” !
Thank you for Harriet Lane’s story. I did not know about her life, and it was extraordinary. It made me appreciate a side of James Buchanan that I’d been unaware of. She seems to have been the Jackie Kennedy of her day in regard to fashion.
Excellent and thanks. I have heard of President Buchanan's neice serving as the White House hostess, but never heard her story.

My mom lost her dad when she was 11, so this story resonates with me!
