It makes you wonder that the American Spirit that has accomplished so much to bring prosperity from ashes seems to be suffering from neglect and lack of attention here lately. Some of our most treasured cities are showing signs of severe neglect.

Betsy Tara Ross that's why Chicago is known as the Second City! It's also the name of the comedy troupe where John Belushi and others got their big break.

Rebuilding after horrific destruction is a lesson we must remember and let it inspire us to never give up, even when it seems hopeless 🇺🇸

Thank you Tara. Chicago and probably the rest of the United States learned much from that devastating fire. Building and fire codes and construction techniques had to be improved if future fires of rhat size were to be avoided.

Poor Katie O'Leary and her cow have taken the blame for starting for 150 years and maybe they weren't actually to blame? We will never know.

An incredible / terrible loss … but the rebuilding effort was a testament to the resilience of the people of Chicago ! Great example of American spirit and determination - setbacks don’t keep us down very long and our comeback efforts have always been impressive and

successful ! Thanks again for sharing, Tara !!! 🙏🏻❤️👍🏻👍🏻

I once read a book about the Chicago fire, possibly 5th or 6th grade for a book report probably. It was one of those "I was there" type of books. Found it kind of scary.

I visited this small museum few year ago and the PESTIGO Fire seriously overwhelms the Chicago fire for damage, area of destruction, and loss of life.

Even the FEDS agree more destruction -> https://www.weather.gov/grb/peshtigofire

Historically, the Peshtigo Fire has been somewhat overshadowed by the Great Chicago Fire, though the Peshtigo Fire covered a much greater area and had many more fatalities. The Peshtigo Fire burned 1,875 square miles and destroyed twelve communities, killing between 1,200 and 2,500 people.

How American. Absolutely, but also a lesson for all time which keeps repeating itself. Mistakes and failures, if we pay attention, will teach us more in a short time than we will find in years of success. It is one of the most valuable aspects of history.

I cannot even imagine what it was like in a firestorm but I do know the roar of an Oklahoma tornado which commonly travels Northeast across the state. Americans know how to turn a tragedy into opportunity to improve their community. Chicagoans set the mark for all of us to follow. Thank you for sharing!
