Two women by the names of Grace and Rachel Martin were among those who were being harassed by Loyalists and British officers in the area. Those brave women managed to get the last say.
Hard to imagine two women dressed in men's clothing could capture British officers, grab their messages and allow their captives to go, all in daylight. Then the women alerted General Greene of the British army's intentions by giving the stolen messages to him.
Then to later receive these same officers in their home, without the officers having recognized them as the same women who earlier had captured them, when dressed as men.
Yes, I imagine that the ladies recalled that story many times. The Martin women were undoubtedly regarded as heroes.
Love that much, much lesser known history! πΊπΈβ€οΈ Great book also, Tara.
TY Tara! Great history. I suspect the Martin women had a good laugh after the British officers left, and good for the Martin women too.
It's the small stories that make history exciting and fun to learn.
Brave Ladies for Sure.!!
Incredible story. Chutzpah is the word that comes to mind.
