I love these insights into our constitution.

The modern equivalent of his statement being, “Two wolves and a sheep getting together and deciding what’s for lunch is a democracy.“

Very interesting story, the founders all agreed that power corrupts and government was a necessary evil. The balance for a government strong enough to protect and look out for the interests of the States, but also kept in check by the States was needed. Only a Republic with a strong constitution with rights of the individual protected could do this. Even so this produced concerns, "A Republic if you can keep it" was the hope. We have gone way to far away from what the founders gave us. Our government is as corrupt as our society's morals.

A wise man he was and a great patriot and statesman. Without such leaders as wise as he was the great Republic of the United States of America would have never have risen to the top of all Nations like it did. Perhaps one day we will again to be the Greatest Nation on the face of this world.

May God Bless America.

I wonder what he and other Founding Fathers would think of attempts at mob rule nowadays?

His arguments, both clear and concise, make a fair amount of sense. I have long thought voting by those holding land made some sense, considering they have skin in the game. I know this would be a very unpopular stance, considering the huge amount of people this would exclude. Perhaps at some level it would work, but I suspect it would never come to fruition.

Years ago when I was younger, while all registered voters could vote for people running for local, state, and federal office; property taxes were voted on solely by the people whose property would be taxed. Makes sense to me. However, someone in the judicial branch decided that "all voters have an interest in property taxes" so the property owners only rule was thrown out.

Our nation is the best of all styles of government. I love my country but I don't love government. It talks a lot of work to govern properly. Our founding fathers new this and thankfully gave us good tools to guide us. It is up to us to keep it running smoothly. Thanks Tara.

A nice history lesson about another patriot who was instrumental in forming the American Republic. Unfortunately we have veered off course and it looks like the ship is at last being righted once more. The men who wrote the Constitution and the man responsible for the Preamble along with those responsible for the Bill of Rights make it possible, if we the people are willing, to keep the Republic. They gave us the foundation. Down through our history we have managed to rescue our country from the downward trajectory some have led us. Looks like we’re doing it again. I hope our amazing history will be taught in schools once more so the children grow up with an appreciation for their country. We truly live in a wonderful country and it’s worth every effort to keep it.

I love this story. Initially I thought "Gouverneur" was his title as 'Governor', then I see it his name! And I love the 'he was tall like Geo Washington and stood in for him on the sculpture. Wish we had more of people like him in today's Congress.

Thank you Tara. Gouverneur Morris understood the dangers of a pure democracy and he would surely be suspect today but I am thankful for him and his fellow founders whose vision and intelligence molded their thoughts and voices into our Constitution. God bless Gouverneur Morris and all of his fellow founders and God, please continue to bless this great nation.

Thank you, Tara, for a most interesting piece on our founding fathers. They were looking for balance even then.
