That question is never more relevant than it is today. Prideful ambition vs. an attitude of public service. We are seeing the consequences of that being played out today.

Thank you Tara. No, I can not imagine what would have happened had John Hancock been appointed Commander in Chief instead of George Washington. Thank God that John Adams worked for Washington's appointment and Thank God that George Washington accepted the job.

Providence ordained the outcome of the war and protected George Washington as Commander in Chief and as our first president of the United States of America.

John Hancock may not have had the humility and determination of Washington and God may not have helped guide and protect him as with George Washington.

Thank you Tara and thank God for George Washington and for the United States of America.

Washington did not lobby for the command, but I understand that he wore a military uniform daily throughout the proceedings leading to his appointment. He had the hubris and experience for the position, but carried himself in humility. I grow more amazed about this remarkable man every time I read about him. He stands out as one of a few great men of American and world history.

Hancock, a professional smuggler by trade, had no military training or experience. It was very presumptuous of him to see himself as general of an army. John Adams, on numerous occasions, proved himself to be a wise man.

Washington, or Hancock. I know too little of Hancock's history and his disposition. That Hancock wanted the appointment so dearly causes me to ponder his acutal intent in hoping for or seeking the appointment. And since Washington is shown in known history and text not really seeking the job yet accepting is to be considered as well. We know result of his leadership. It did result in the ultimate victory for our Independence.

The power of the written word past and present. One outstanding letter from Washington surviving to the present along with the comments from Dr Benjamin Rush my ancestor. I am so grateful.

If John Handcock was the General in Charge, it would have been different. No way to describe the path or outcomes. From what I read, he would have been a poor leader. I attribute this to the way he reacted to John Adams speech. Glad to know the back story and thanks to Tara for making it available.

Without any doubt the leaders chose the right man as Commander of the American Army. Washington was a unifier-- not so sure about Hancock.

A wonderful story to start my day Tara. I love to see and hear how General George Washington was concerned about his capabilities to lead and bear the responsibility of leading the army. Truly a humble servant "Of and For The People".

John Adams definitely made the correct nomination and the Congress debated and did accept him as Commander in Chief to tyranny’s regret!

Washington was the Commander we needed and fulfilled his mission!

Thank you Tara!

Our country would look very different if Hancock instead of Washington had been chosen. John Adams was wise to select and stick with Washington. Humility is a beautiful quality in men and women. Washington lost battles, but he also won many key battles. Perhaps his ability to admit and acknowledge his own shortcomings and mistakes is what made him so great. It is the lack of those qualities that is bringing our country down.

🇺🇸 Thanks for the reminder, that these great men were still men.

Subject to the fear, doubt and petty jealousy we all face...yet had the courage and foresight to gain our freedom and form this most amazing country. 🇺🇲

Because Washington was chosen, nobody (but you!) knows John Hancock well enough to answer that question!
