Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday. Ltjg Rufus Herring continued command of his little LCI(G)-449 gun boat although badly injured. His mission was to provide cover for UDT swimmers. Until his boat was out of ammunition, he and his crew continued providing cover. Upon receiving the MOH Herring stated that he was among others on his boat and that they were just doing what they were assigned to do. Typical of so many American Heroes, Herring deflected his award to the action of his crew. The actual battle of Iwo Jima would begin two days after the LCI(G)-449 was nearly destroyed.
The humility displayed by Herring takes my breath. Thank you for bringing his story to us today, Tara. I recall a line from a movie where one old soldier at the end questions his worthiness of such sacrifices as were made and question my own worthiness. We should all live lives worthy of the sacrifices made my men such as Herring. My freedom was worth it for them, so I need to reciprocate by never forgetting and by doing my part in our great country.
What a great story of upstanding bravery in the face of overwhelming odds! Lt. Herring showed the strength of America's fighters and was a shining example we can all look to with pride. RIP, good sir.
