It always hurts when the brave hero loses his life. Garfield Langhorn is another young man who did what he could to save the lives of others without regard to his own safety. It’s good his family received the MOH on his behalf. It doesn’t make up for his loss or give comfort, but they can treasure it as a gift from a grateful nation.
Why do they do it, throw themselves on a grenade knowing they will be blown to bits? They're not thinking of politics, red states or blue states, believer or nonbeliever. They do it because of the strong bond they have formed with their fellow comrades. It's a strange and beautiful brotherhood thing they share with those who have their back. RIP, soldier.
I have the option to edit, too. I'm wondering if you clicked on the set of ellipses next to Jack's reply by mistake? I only get the edit option next to my own comments. It's the set of ellipses below the comment, not above the comment.
So many young men died in Viet Nam but because of Garfield Langhorn some lived to be able to return to their families . He truly did care for others like his mother said and proved it in the most heroic way. Thank you, Tara, for sharing his story so that we can all celebrate his actions and mourn the loss of a wonderful young man.
Thank you, Garfield, and all of the others who sacrificed so that we, and others, might have freedom today. We are more grateful than you could ever imagine. Thank you Tara for the amazing historical accounts you bring to us daily.
That was a wonderful story Tara. Think of the bravery to perform such a selfless act. I always think of the wasted lives from Vietnam. Old men wanting to enrich themselves with power, money, and ego are willing to sacrifice young men like this. Sadly, we still see it happening today. Thank you Tara for bringing this young man's heroic actions to our attention.
Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday. PFC Garfield Langhorn gave his life to save others. This young man's selfless act was actually the same caring act that others before and after have done in order to protect others who were nearby.
God bless Mr. Garfield Longhorn and all who have given their lives for this great nation. May God bless all who have served.
Too many died in that country. Garfield Langhorn was caring, good and giving man. He did what many in battle do, save his fellow man. We owe a debt that can never be paid to all who fight and more so to those who don't return alive.
“There was something about that moment,” she told a reporter. “I knew—I somehow just knew—he was never coming back.”
This was the scenario for many of us in that day. Many of us saw our loved ones off at the airport thinking the same thing and yet hoping it would not happen. Thank you Pvt. Garfield Longhorn and your family and fiancé’ for your sacrifice.

Oops! Meant loss not lose. Wish we could edit our comments on here.
I found edit option in the ellipse to the right (...). Hope you can also.
Humm...it’s not giving me that option. Only options: Share link to comment, Hide comment or Delete comment.
Ok. Thank you.

I figured it out. I cannot edit from the Substack app. I have to go online to:
https://taraross.substack.com/p/tdih-garfield-langhorn-moh/comments
That is where I can edit or delete.
Yes. That’s the one I clicked on. I think I was able to edit one time a while ago. Not sure where the option went. Thanks for checking, Tara.
Maybe Tara can help. My options are Edit or Delete. The comment box doesn't allow images.
Commenting here so I can see what my options look like! :)

No greater love there is than to lay down your life for your friends!

Sadly to many of the heroes didn’t come home. May you be with god and alive for all eternity. God bless

Appears to be a most unlikely hero, bit his caring nature sure shines through his heroic actions. Thank you Tara.

Another Brave Soldier who gave his life to protect his comrades in arms.
“Someone’s got to care”! Said Langhorn before he threw himself on a deadly grenade!
Unselfishness in the face of certain death!
Thank you, Tara, for another story of heroism which should never be forgotten!
