I had heard rumors of this event before, but never the real story. Thanks, Tara, for clearing up the matter! It's wonderful that neither was seriously injured and that their differences were, at least in part, settled. Oh that we all could walk away from anger and settle our hurts easily!!!

Maybe a dumb question, but under 'the' Liberty Tree - where? In Boston?

I don't think it's dumb. I have the same question! Thanks for asking it!

Actually, almost every town that had a committee of correspondence had a liberty tree. This included Georgia and South Carolina. So the location was likely in Georgia. Likely Augusta was the local. I think Augusta was not yet controlled by the British but Savanna was.

Yes it was in Boston.

Wow. Another story that I haven't heard, Tara. The manner in which the duel was conducted is very interesting. Two reluctant combatants. I wonder why it wasn't General Washington's job to appoint the General in charge of the South Carolina troops and to arbitrate the dispute between Gadsden and Howe?

Also, was Gadsdens military career over at this point? Thank you, Tara.

A duel that never happened! There are certainly better ways to settle disagreements. Seems like both men didn’t really want to take the other man’s life. The best part is Gadsden later advocated for laws to prevent dueling.

Both gentlemen apparently realized that killing one another was not the answer. Oh that people today would be that mature!

You inferred you knew the answer when you used the term gentlemen.

Love this story! I’m always amazed at how people, imperfect as they are..can finally come together for a common cause..we need to build on this now!

An appropriate ending to a duel for once!

Maybe the beginning of the end of duels. A good thing if it was. Glad they chose to not kill each other.

Good grief.....when I first began to read the lesson, I had forgotten about the American General Howe! So my brain is trying to figure out how an Amercan General was having a duel with a British General DURING the war for independence! I think that I need more coffee. Regardless, Tara Ross, thank you for the lesson.

It does show that personal vanity and ego created serious animosity between members of the same fighting force, and that is dangerous.

First I'm learning of this.

Thanks, TR!

Seems a man's reputation mattered a great deal back then, but not worth a life to these men.

What a hoot! Thank you, Tara! 🇺🇸

A very interesting way to end the duel, perhaps when push came to shove neither man truly wanted it! Thanks Tara 😊

I sometimes wish we still had dueling...🤔

I prefer the way Andrew Jackson dueled!
