It amazes me that England was at that time our greatest enemy, but would become our staunchest ally many years later. Remember that during the Civil War, England backed and supported the South in order to try once again to destroy the young nation. How the tables have turned!

When most people think of The War of 1812 two events pop: The White House burned and The Battle of New Orleans. As this cite advises it was really about the territory and the resources on both sides of the US/Canada border. The British were still looking to protect their trade emanating from and going in and out of west Canada and into the US Northwest territory which had recently been mapped by Lewis and Clark. They and the French were still nurturing and takin advantage of the trade they had set up for years and years. It would be a pivotal 'moment' in US foreign relations going forward. Thank you Tara!

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡² Amazing how little is taught about the War of 1812. Yet such an important time for this new country. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

An interesting turn of events. After mistakes were made and it looked bad for the Americans they rallied and through much tribulation continued to fight for a free and prosperous nation. Niagara is a beautiful place and full of history.

The war of 1812 seems to have re-cemented the senses of unity and patriotism in the people of the United States. At least, for another period of time. War, threatening our survival and Status Quo can be a catalyst for unity instead of apathy.

Not saying that's what we need today but, it could wake up this apathetic people.

Thank you Tara. Very interesting story.

I need to dive into the War of 1812 more. It's amazing how the Northern campaign goes over the exact same ground as the French and Indian War. I think Fort Niagara has been destroyed like a dozen times, and changed hands just as often. Thanks for sharing, and happy holidays!

I learned today more than double the history I learned in High School. Thank you Tara for enlightening me today.

I really feel like the War of 1812 ought to be called American RΓ©volution Part II. We got a cool national anthem/fight song out of it, and the Battle of New Orleans (which later begat a great song too!). Thanks again Tara Ross πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

β€œThe people . . . . are more American; they feel and act more as a nation; and I hope that the permanency of the Union is thereby better secured.”

Sorry, it was for a while but prosperity has given people time to want more than they earn and ways to cause dissent among the populace that were unconceivable in 1814.

Great lesson Tara, thanks.
