A great article on our flags history and meaning to the American people. My how we have fallen, we can burn our country's flag but not a pride flag. We don't teach reverence for our flag and those who died for it. To many saying the pledge of allegiance is hate speach. No wonder populism is on the rise we need a people proud of our country and what is stands for.
Today’s holiday is not only a celebration of our flag, but it is also a wonderful demonstration of what one determined individual can accomplish, isn’t it?
Yes, we still have privileges as citizens of the United States regardless of how government or the culture may want to mute them. We need only be a louder majority and assert that privilege. “We The People”!
Thank you Tara. It seems unlikely that a single person can effect something like a Congressional Act, creating a National Flag Day, but Bernard J. Cigrand did just that. His efforts took years and many speeches, etc. But, eventually, his efforts and his goal were achieved.
As you say Tara, our flag is under constant attack and it takes all of us to be certain not to forget its importance. Thank you Tara
Thank you for your passionate beliefs and your idea, Mr. Cigrand, and thank you for your reminder and story, Tara ! I have just placed our flag outside on this beautiful (but very warm day). Happy birthday, American flag !
You are better than me ! As a retired employee of the BSA (all retail in middle Tennessee) it’s been ingrained in me that to do that, I’d have to have a spotlight shining on it after dark, and should bring it in during stormy weather [like we did at summer camp], and I just don’t have the energy or focus to do that. Or maybe I’m just lazy !
I am grateful for Mr. Bernard J. Cigrand. His actions are worthy of a Medal from Congress. His determination in needed today to educate our teachers, students, leaders and many more. Thanks Tara for this lesson as it will be needed every year.
Flag Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. June 14th was my Grandmother’s birthday. She was a very patriotic lady. It also happened to be President Trump’s birthday. This is a good lesson in what one person can accomplish with grit and determination. Like others before him Bernard Cigrand would be very sad to see how our beautiful flag is disrespected. Our poor flag is not honored as it should be probably because the meaning of the flag is not being taught through the generations. Hopefully we are starting to return to our patriotic roots. Happy Flag Day! Thanks for another great post, Tara!
My late significant other's (a retired U.S. Navy officer) birthday is today. Growing up, he always thought his neighborhood flew their flags today in honor of his birthday, until his parents explained it to him. That story and yours always makes me smile.

Sad words about the current state of our nation, Sika. I hope we can rise again from the ashes as we have throughout our history.
Great thoughts, sad but true, and well written.

Fly your flag today. With the stars on the top. The correct way.
Every day is flag day for me! Love Old Glory, ever may she wave.
🇺🇸 God Bless America 🇺🇸

We proudly fly our flag 375 days 24/7! We love and appreciate all that it represents.

We do both those things. It’s all lit up from dust til dawn and kept dry in stormy weather. 😊
It's also the birthday of the next Grover Cleveland! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
