God bless the flag of the United States of America and the Country it represents. May we always respect the flag, as so many have fought and died to defend it.

As a patriotic American who served, it breaks my heart when the flag is disrespected and it makes me angry, as well. Thank you Tara.

Awesome post, Tara! Still so much to learn about our country,’s history, our constitution and our flag too. Sure glad they dropped the hand raised toward the flag. Seems a bit overkill. We should stand respectfully hand over heart for all the flag represents.

The disrespecting of my Country’s flag started in the 1960’s. Protesters of the Vietnam War threw the flag on the ground, spit on it, walked on it, burned it or desecrated it in other ways. One way was to wear it upside down with an X drawn on it. When I was home on leave serving during that time I went to my old HS football game. I proudly wore my Marine Corps uniform. During the game a not so bright kid wearing a Levi jacket with a flag sewn on it upside down, threw his soda drink in my face and started calling me various names. Yes I lost my temper and hit him smack in his foul mouth and knocked him down. I then picked him up, threw him over my shoulders in a fireman’s carry and dumped him upside down in a trash can. About that time the police arrived and asked what happened. I explained the situation to them and one of them started laughing until, the other one was smiling until a Sargent arrived and looked sternly at them. After full statements were taken by myself, the “victim” and witnesses, the policeman escorted me out of the stadium and a police Captain arrived to take custody of me. He drove me home and talked to my parents to explain what was going on. He asked me to change into civilian clothing and to please give me my uniform. He said he was personally going to have my uniform dry cleaned and would have it returned by 1700 (5:00 pm) the next day.

I never heard any more about that incident. I can only surmise that the kids parents agreed the kid got what he deserved.

Moral to the story is please do not disrespect the American flag in from if a Marine, and remember, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine!”

"How will the controversy end? Perhaps the end of this history story is still in the future."

Yes, perhaps, far in the future.

"O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"

Thanks, Tara. I wish our leaders brought attention to the Flag Code.

I love my country and the flag represents that love. Respect for the flag correlates to my respect for all things in my life. Love God with everything you have and love your neighbor the same way you love yourself is the great command and this is where my love of country resides. The cloth that holds the stars and stripes is not what I respect, rather what it represents, so I hold the flag in respect for our country.

The disrespect shown our flag brings tears to my eyes. So many have given their lives so that we can live freely under that standard. Please show your love for our nation and people by showing respect to the symbol that unites us.
