My ancestors Richard Henry Lee, Francis Lightfoot Lee and Arthur Lee were members of the first and second Continal Congress. Richard and Francis signed the Declaration of Independence. Arthur was the first spy commissioned by the Continal Congress with George Washington as the Spy Master.
Love that you are keeping the real history of our nation alive.
I hate watching the States give up their hard-fought autonomy to the Federal government, and that Congress is giving up their mandated duties to the Executive and an unelected bureaucracy. We are on a path to disaster...
We need so much to seek guidance from God! Our own puny intellect strives against the true spirit of the Constitution, sparring for its way over every other, missing the chance to serve all. The Congress that day looked toward an equable solution and were eventually guided to the best of all forms of governance. We today need to continue in that vein.
Thanks, Tara! A great lesson onto the thinking and actions of our ancestors! Things always go better - even for nations - when we, "Trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in everything that you do and He will set your paths straight." (Proverbs)
Just this lesson alone shows the diversity of these colonies, from size to religious beliefs, to basic thoughts on how to govern themselves...yet also how to unite in the common cause of liberty for all the colonies separately and together. Actually an astounding beginning.
Thank you Tara. Yes, we all definitely need to read Psalm 35 together and individually. A fitting scripture, for sure. It set the stage for those disparate Colonies to cooperate and negotiate with each other, because they understood that their chances of succeeding were greater together than separate.
Today, compromise is nearly impossible and the government is in disarray. Political party trumps everything, it seems.
God will work with men and through men to achieve His purpose. If it means that he will shake our foundation to drive us to our knees to pay attention to Him, He will do it. A country suffers or flourishes with its leadership as Ezekiel 22: 23-31 shows.
A wonderful piece of our history. Uniting everyone; even the ones who were not of the religious persuasion. The clergyman chose a beautiful Psalm to open Congress that morning. There is bot such unity in congress today. The non religious of that day were not anti-religious like they are today. They had their differences, but they also showed respect on differing opinion. They talked it out and worked through it. Big states and little states all mattered. That seems to be a lost skill. This is a great lesson. Thanks, Tara. You obviously do a lot of research. It’s greatly appreciated.
Although Rev. Duche later fled to England, his reading and prayer appear to not be a coincidence as God certainly assisted in this cause which the colonists saw as a righteous one! Just as the Pilgrims appealed to God and dedicated their purpose to God's service, the Continental Congress appealed to heaven for the benefit and help of God. Even those less religious in that body recognized this. There was a price paid by Great Britain for her ignoring God-given rights and it has been paid heavily through the years. Just as judgment later fell on this country once in the Civil War for not dealing with slavery early in our history, I wonder what judgment will fall upon this country in the near future. Perhaps our country is the metaphorical Babylon of The Revelation which is cried over after her great fall, but only God knows for sure. One thing for certain - the Scripture says to "Be not deceived for God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows, that shall he reap." (Galatians 6:9)
I would appreciate others thoughts on this as well in relation to the awesome story which the Professor has shared with us. It is obvious that many in this audience feel that Divine intervention was key to the American cause in that breaking away from England.
Duche’s prayer I am told lasted several hours! A very heartfelt prayer indeed... I don’t know many believers that can pray that long. Should tell us something about the Founders, huh?

In my opinion, this is where we have gone astray. We removed God from everything and then we blame Him for everything that is wrong.
This is the prayer Congress and the military ought to pray every day!

Very well reported, Tara.
Wow, so good

'A Republic, IF you can keep it"! "IF"!
