A sad reminder that war is hell, unlike today where everything is scrutinized D-day might not have happened after this tragedy. If we fought wars like we do today back then we would not have won. Those brave men who died, died heroes. Thanks for this reminder of how much thanks we owe to the Greatest Generation!

What a terrible way to learn and to train. Operation Tiger may have been necessary but so many dead and wounded seems unimaginable. God bless the Greatest Generation. Their perseverance was something difficult to imagine but we owe everything to them. Thank you Tara.

This was a horrible training exercise. If you add these deaths to the deaths of the actual KIA of D-Day the total would be over 5,100 deaths and over 5,000 wounded on the first day of the invasion. Tho these numbers seem staggering to the cost in lives lost to stop the insanity of the Nazi regime but was minor compared to the number of Jewish deaths alone during the Holocaust. Over 10 million Jewish deaths during the Nazi occupation of the concentration camps.

Let us all pray that we will never see a WWIII ever.

That seems like a lot of soldiers dying to “get the kinks out”. I hope, because of disasters like this and others, that a higher premium is now placed on planning, planning, planning ! Another story I was not at all familiar with.

I reckon training exercises with death by friendly fire would be the most gut-wrenching notifications to make.

That’s a tough one, and sad all at once.

I am glad they had the deficiencies pointed out but the cost was so great. Amphibious assault troops needed instruction and experience in managing getting ashore. Sadly, this proved to be a problem on D-Day as well as many troops drowned before getting to shore.

Again like the USS Thresher, such a tragedy but so much gained information from these losses. Thank you Tara for remembering these unfortunate Hero's!

Training can be as dangerous as operations. More so depending on what people know. The story told us that, but I have lived in training and war so it isn't a story. It is a memory that lives in me each and every day. God bless those who perish to help us do better when the operation begins. Thank you Tara.

🇺🇸 Training exercises serve a purpose, even, sadly, the tragedies. Hard lessons learned at a high cost.

Lest we forget 🇺🇲

What a tragedy. I am often amazed at how fragile our military plans are. Lack of maintenace, poor comminication, improper training, all leading to chaos and the death of our troops. Earlier this week was the tragedy in the desert trying to rescue the hostages in iran. Black Hawk Down. Many incidents never become public. I think we should expect nothing but the best for our military and these stories are important to help us be aware. Voting has a direct impact on our military, so everyone should be knowledgeable regarding policies and candidates. We have turmoil and wars are being fought. Thank you Tara for this reminder of how our young military members place their trust in the service of this nation. We should NEVER let them down.

WOW, I had never heard of trial invasion before!

749 Service members lost their lives during this Exercise but a lot was learned! That learned went on to make the Normandy Invasion a success! Without the Exercise no telling how Normandy would have ended!

Thank you, Tara, for this story of failure which lead to victory!
