Everyone ought to know this story! Most know of Ira Hayes. Who were the other 3? Everybody should be familiar with guns from childhood. It's a good thing the Founding Fathers were!

What an awesome Medal of Honor story this Monday morning, Tara. With all the bad news it’s a joy to read the accounts of brave, tried and true Americans. No matter the background or race like Ernest Childers they are all Americans first. He wanted to stay alive and he wanted to help keep his buddies alive. We are lucky to have such men and women defend our nation. Of course he didn’t think he’d done anything special or was a hero. That’s what all heroes say about their special actions.

Another great warrior, humble to a fault. We need more great Americans like that in our military today instead of politicians that are currently in the top echelon.

Once again, amazing feats seen by the doer as "just doing my job." Watched over by providence as he moved forward and using his intelligence to overcome obstacles made him the hero.

As to knowing how to use a gun at an early age, I believe it would behoove every family to be aware of gun safety and proper usage of small arms. With proper home discipline, that knowledge would prevent much of or even most of today's "gun violence" which is actually a rage problem.

I am glad he survived. That enabled him to teach his troops how to be all they could be. An impactful leader and hero. Thank you LTC Childers for your service. Thank you Tara for this Medal of Honor story.

Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday. Ernest Childers was awarded the MOH for his marksmanship, for his leaskills and for his bravery.

He nearly singlehandedly took out an enemy position, snipers machine gun nests and others while walking with a broken foot.

An amazing man who not unlike many other MOH awardees, felt that his actions weren't heroic but that he was just trying to keep his men and himself alive.

Mr. Childers was a hero in my opinion. I particularly liked the story of how he attained his marksmanship. Ernest Childers, an American Hero.

Wow - another humble hero who was only thinking of his men and himself staying alive. Learning to shoot well at such an early age sure did come in handy, then and in the war. America is great because of men like him who have fought and served to preserve our freedoms. I thank God for our military every day but also pray that we will never be in a terrible conflict again. If such should happen though, I hope there will be more like Lt. Childers who step up and step out for us.

“I was just trying to stay alive and help keep my buddies alive.” In the military we are all in on the “buddy system”. Thank you Mr. Childers for being a best buddy and a hero. Your country honors you!

Joseph Oklahombi, from Oklahoma, was one of the original choctaw code talkers and one of the highest decorated soldiers from Oklahoma in WW1. He should have received the Medal of Honor.

I knew this story - at least part of it - and it’s a good one. The right man in the right place at the moment he was needed. Very deserving.
