Well ! Eldridge Gerry, another patriot I was not familiar with ! Tara, I may have learned more history from you in a year than from all of my teachers in my 69 years of life. Your stories inspire me to give back and to take more a part in government. As always, a great story, good solid history, and another piece about someone who helped our young country gain independence.
Absolutely amazing! History I did not know. It’s interesting to learn about the term gerrymandering. I had no idea how it came to be. Elbridge Gerry in spite of being an ordinary man ended up doing extraordinary things and was a true patriot. Another great piece of American history probably few of us have heard.
The illustration looks like a sick dragon to me rather than a salamander. Elbridge Gerry devoted his life to his nation and he should be remembered as such, in my opinion. His many contributions to the founding and independence of the United States of America were very remarkable.
While technically correct that his home district resembled a dragon or salamander it isn't clear that he manipulated the geography for a political advantage.
His epitaph should be known and a matter of responsibility for every citizen. We should all devote our lives and actions in the best interests of our country and I would say that the reverse is equally true, the country should devote its actions in the best interests of each of its citizens.
Growing up in Essex County I was familiar with Mr G. Moved later to Plymouth County where Gerry Studds, a descendant I believe, was my Congressman. His story ended ignominiously with Congressional pages.
My understanding is that Gerry didn't even like the re-apportioned district that he signed off on that has become the one thing most of us remember his name for. Of all the offices he'd sought - the governorship was what took most of his struggle -- and then this is his legacy? It was so divergent from his values.
I wish we all lived by this quote every day. “It is the duty of every man, though he may have but one day to live, to devote that day to the good of his country.”. Thank you Tara for the amazing lesson.

Thank you Tara.
Thank you for a great history lesson, I didn't know much about this great patriot! Great story!
Loved it. I always wondered where the term gerrymandered came from.
❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I wonder how many politicians know the origination of the term gerrymandering that they argue against so much.
Thanks for the post!
Awesome as ever!
Awesome Patriot!
Thank you, Tara.
🇺🇸 A true patriot, with an unfortunate legacy.
Thanks, TR 🇺🇲

Thank you for the story. I have never known of this patriot! There are multitudes of ‘regular’ men and women who contributed to our freedom.
