Stanton was determined to find and punish the assassin. He was ready to conclude that a broader conspiracy was afoot, perhaps planned with the help of Confederate officials.
Thank you Tara for another interesting twist on the assassination of President Lincoln. Secretary of War Stanton seems to have had a burning need to seek justice for the death of his close friend, Abraham Lincoln and he didn't let protocol stand in his way.
Like other assassinations, the specifics of this event remain locked in history. Much is known, but conjecture about other aspects have remained over the years. Stanton did everything he could to make sure the conspirators were brought to justice. The wounds of war were much too fresh to have this handled as a civilian matter.
This leaves so many unanswered questions as is usual with government. accounts. Sometimes the truth, all of it, comes out and sometimes there is still a lot of speculation. There are exaggerations or things left out. It happens all the time. Sadly the main event remains true. President Lincoln was assassinated. America lost a great president, but there was some justice at least.
Thank you, Tara, for another wonderful and interesting take of Lincoln's final hours. Stanton was one to "take charge", and keep Washington under control after Lincoln's death was made public.
Thanks Tara. I am sure there will always be speculation about Lincoln's assassination, the who, the how, how the perpetrators planned, etc. Not so much talked about is Stanton's role. Interesting.
The President is also the Commander In Chief so using the military courts could be logical. I see merit in both avenues of justice. An opinion only. Not an expert on law.

Seems there's always looming questions on assassinations that are never known 🤔.

Concerning the choice of trial (military vs civilian), aren't we still dealing with the same issue today with the detainees in Guantanamo, Cuba?
HUZZAH HERO!!! 🇺🇸
Thank you, Tara.

I would have agreed with those that spoke out against a Trial by Military Court.

Very interesting as always and some items that I hadn’t heard. Thanks!
