Few of these Medal of Honor stories bring tears to my eyes, but this one did. Maybe it's because this young man listened to the voice in his heart and mind and did what he was told, saving much time and many lives.
Thank you Tara for another fascinating story of a true American Hero. Mr. Donald Ross received the first Navy MOH award in WW2 for working in impossible conditions to get the Battleship USS Nevada underway and out of Pearl Harbor.
His premonition of needing to be aboard when not on duty allowed him to be in the action when the Japanese struck Battleship Row.
Typical of MOH awardees, Mr. Ross felt that he was doing his duty and that he didn't do anything special. God bless Donald Ross and all of the Greatest Generation who fought for our continued freedom during WW2 and God bless all others who have served or serve this Great Nation.
Another virtue in all the MOH recipients that also motivated Donald Ross is a deep rooted love for America. Accounts of Pearl Harbor especially hits home. My father-in-law was a young man employed as a civilian at Pearl Harbor. All civilian employees were called to work. He told us he had to dodge shrapnel attacks and spent the day building stretchers. Knowing someone actually there when it happened it affects a person in a deeper way. When you share these stories, Tara, it produces a personal connection to all these heroes. Appreciate your efforts.
Fantastic read! I’ve been to the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor. It’s very beautiful and tragic at the same time.
One thing struck me in this article. Yes, we did know war was coming. Many think the attack was allowed because the majority of Americans wanted nothing to do with WWII. It was a Europe or Asian problem. Not our problem!
He said "I love my country like I love my family. God bless America". What a man. What a hero that this man was. He wasn't a musician or sports figure, just a man putting his life on the line for his country. Wow.
The old girl (she was commissioned before and sailed in WWI) sank to the bottom of Pearl Harbor from the damage sustained in the attack, was re-floated, repaired and served during the rest of WWII.
Another great American from the greatest generation. God I pray we have more of them in the coming years to keep America going.

New to me and much enjoyed. I am in awe of the determination Mr. Ross showed. Thanks Tara.
Was this sailor related to your husband? Hopefully so! Thanks again Tara Ross!
Thank you Mr. Ross for your vigilance and skillful attention to your ship and her crew.
Wonderful example of bravery with God leading the way!🇺🇸
We were privileged to be at the commissioning of the USS Ross, the destroyer named after him. What a great story!
🇺🇸 It's always the same, they wonder why the fuss, they were just servicemen, doing their duty.
Yet their actions were responsible for saving lives, well above and beyond the call of duty.
Very grateful for men like Warrant Officer Ross.
Thanks for sharing, TR 🇺🇸
A typical response from a MoH recipient "I was just doing my job", Great story, I might have to find a good book specifically on Pearl Harbor.
“He didn’t know what all the fuss was about!”
The Officers and his shipmates certainly knew what “the fuss was about!” He saved lives that day by putting his own life in jeopardy!
Thank you, Tara, for another story of heroism!
Thanks Tara!!! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
