Thank you for providing these accounts. Without your diligence Tara, most of us would never know the feats of these brave men!

Another hero and chose to serve his country and fellow soldiers when he was 37 years old and didn’t have to go. I wonder what his family, especially his wife, felt when he volunteered to leave cooking and go into battle? Fortunately he made it home safely. Such a sad ending.

Another unsung modest Hero. These men simply amaze me and I am so happy that our Country recognized them with the highest medal possible. The Medal of Honor!!!!

Thank you, Tara, for sharing the story of this Heroes' secret gallantry.

Kerstetter's courage was known only to the men that watched his bravery unfold in front of them.

The men and women that have returned from war and the battles that occurred in far away places, seldom bring back stories to share about their own heroism. They just want to forget about the terrible things they saw, heard, and experienced, during their long days under fire.

Most bring back [night mares] and memories that they want to erase from their minds.

Their accounts of fear and (even heroism) are theirs's to keep in secret files of their mind.

This is truly an amazing story! This is the kind of men whose deeds paid the cost of our freedom! And yet he is a rare example of them. This is the kind of free men whom this country has produced although they are still not numerically prolific. Yet, so many have aspired to Kerstetter’s example and many others inspired by his and others like him. Many thanks to this humble hero.

To enlist at the age of 37 must have been driven by some compelling reason to serve. And at that age when most men are well into settling down, he was hanging from a cliff shooting the enemy with a rifle from his hip. Thank you for your selfless sacrifice Mr. Kerstetter!

From Pfc, to the rank of Lt Col, that is amazing, yet his actions at Luzon are far more inspiring to those whom he fought along side, and we who learn of his actions there.

Col. Dexter Kerstetter was a one man army in the Philippines during WW2 and the then, old man was responsible for taking a valuable position, while wounded.

His brave actions resulted in a MOH and, true to form, he led a quiet life after the war. His life and Valor as another Hero of the Greatest Generation continue to be remembered in his hometown in the Pacific Northwest.

Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday.

Super human combat performance from a private who once worked in the kitchen Volunteering to fight in the hellish Luzon campaign .

Remarkable in every way imaginable ! Thank you for sharing this hero’s story with us Tara !

How fast did he get promoted from being a private volunteering for combat duty in April of 1945 to VJ Day ?

If he was promoted to Lt. Colonel … there must be more to this hero’s incredible story !

May God grant this warrior eternal peace and happiness !
