“I would follow him straight to the gates of hell if I had to,” one of his men would later say. The feeling was mutual. First Sergeant McNerney loved those boys like they were his own sons.
McNerney was the REAL DEAL, he wasn't "stars and bars" headliner, he saw what had to be done and did it!! This is what the MOH is all about, bravery, action, and humility! Thank you Tara for today's lesson and bringing this fine soldier's deeds to the forefront!
"I was just doing my job." I am sure he saw it that way, but he went beyond and above "his job." Thank you for sharing McNerney's story, Tara Ross. It is inspiring and challenging.
Just doing his job! I have yet to see a Medal of Honor winner say anything different. I suppose that is what makes them winners in the first place. They are basically people of honor who serve with their whole heart, love of country and love of their fellow man. They put themselves aside and do what ever is necessary. If we could just strive to have that attitude in our daily lives, what wonders could we accomplish?
Leading his men! Going before them. Setting the example of a great leader. Willing to risk his life for the lives of his troops. Humility and courage. All part of the character of a Medal of Honor recipient. McNerney is another deserving member of this exemplary group.
Sergeant McNerney was such an outstanding leader of his men. Words cannot express how much respect I have for this mans courage and ability as a warrior.
MOH Monday is always all emotional recounting of one’s efforts. First Sergeant or TOP as they’re commonly referred to was a leader, a born leader like his family members before him.
It is absolutely remarkable this hero survived his wounds during that battle. Sadly enough not many do.

These people who are called to do a job that risks their lives make it possible for the rest of us to do ours! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Another inspiring story. Another inspiring American. Thank you, Tara!
Not only a warrior but constructing a landing zone in the midst of the battle too. Wow!
I always look forward to your lessons on our Medal of Honor recipients, Tara!
Awesome MOH story today. Thanks Tara for bringing it to us. RIP Sir. Your story shold be a lesson in High School History class.
“Just doing his job” destroying the enemy and saving the lives of American troops! What a hero!!
Thank you Tara, for another story of heroism unknown to me!
Wow. David McNerney was truly an American Hero. A leader who led by example and who never stopped until his men were safe. I salute you Sir.
Thank you Tara for remembering another Hero whose brave actions were recognized with the MOH.
