TDIH: Coolidge & the Boy Scouts
He addressed them less than 3 weeks after his 16-year-old son passed away.
On this day in 1924, Calvin Coolidge addresses the Boy Scouts. His comments came less than 3 weeks after his 16-year-old son had passed away. (See July 5 story, below.) I wonder what he was thinking as he delivered these remarks to a bunch of Boy Scouts?
His full quote is here:
"It was an act of magnificent courage when our ancestors set up a nation wherein any boy may aspire to anything. That great achievement was not wrought without blood and sacrifice. Make firm your resolution to carry on nobly what has been so nobly begun. Let this nation, under your influence, be a finer nation. Resolve that the sacrifices by which your great opportunities have been purchased will be matched by a sacrifice, on your part, that will give your children even a better chance."
Dear regular readers: Full-fledged stories return tomorrow.
President Calvin Coolidges message to the Boy Scouts so soon after his 16 year old son had died was so inspirational.
I for one couldn't have found the strength to deliver that speech had it been me in that circumstance. Silent Cal may have been a man of few words but he certainly used those words remarkably. Thank you Tara.
I wonder if the Scouts still feel it!
