It is so sad that such courageous young men lost their lives in such early age when there was so much to gain from if they had lived. One person that comes to my mind is Joseph P Kennedy II the elder brother of JFK. He volunteered for a mission to knock out German rocket sites and his plane filled with explosives exploded in mid air killing him. My hope is that we should never have wars like that. But, as long as there is suffering, injustice and misery in the world they may continue.
These kinds of attacks continued to be made in the early war years despite the demonstrated failure to do any serious damage because we had to fight with what we had. Billy Mitchell’s demonstration, for which he was courtmartialed, was against a stationary target and no antiaircraft fire.
Do you know what happened to his crew? Were they captured, or did they manage to join up with friendly forces? It would be nice to know the outcome of his sacrifice.
No need to embellish a story like this, filled with action, bravery, and with Captain Kelly giving his life to save as many of his men as he could. With all of the stupid and evil movies being made today (I’m talking to you, Jack Black) why can’t more movies based on true, heroic facts be made ? Thank you for your true heroism and sacrifice, Captain Kelly.
Thank you for a story of a true hero. I remain amazed at the heroics of men who carried on even knowing that such actions would cost them their lives but save others! Thank you for continuing to make all of these known. Truly astounding!
We just returned home from a visit with family in Hawaii. Every time we passed Pearl Harbor, which was almost every day, my thoughts went to all the courageous men and women who fought valiantly under indescribable conditions. Air Force Captain Colin Kelly was one of many. It was good to read his story. His actions were above and beyond his duty. It doesn’t seem like there was much to embellish on his actions.
A sobering tidbit - a fallen soldier was on board our flight from Hawaii along with the marine pall bearers/escorts. We got a water fountain spray welcome by the fire department on arrival. We had to stay on board so the pall bearers/escorts could deplane first. Everyone remained silently and respectfully seated as the casket was removed from the plane and the family received their loved one. It was the first time I’ve witnessed one of our heroes brought back home. I’ve seen many videos online. Actually witnessing it made a lasting impression on me. Thank you, Tara, for all you share, but especially the stories of our military heroes.
Thank you, Tara, for this story of heroism under fire in the face of death!
Colin Kelly gave his all for his crew mates and country!
May he always remain in our memory!
These stories fill my mind with love for my country. Those who have gone before have set the example for those who will follow.
As you said, True Heros don't need embellishment, they earn it just as it happened, and yes He deserved his Medal of Honor.

Thank you Colin Kelly for you courage, bravery and sacrifice. You are indeed a hero!
I'd think a personal approval from a POTUS who died a decade earlier would be awesome....
