A remarkable Marine who understood shooting and the value of his role. I read that the famous SEAL sniper, Chris Kyle, also viewed his job as saving “his” Marines in Falluja. May they both rest in peace.
Charles "Chuck" Mawhinney was obviously a legend as a sniper in Vietnam. He was apparently a nice person who understood that his accomplishments as a sniper saved more lives than he took, by diminishing the enemy's will to fight.
I wish that I had known him. Rest in peace hero, thank you for your service. Thank you Tara.
It takes a sober minded man with the experience of a Vietnam Vet to change the perception of a public that was indoctrinated with so much animus toward the Vietnam Vet by our media. Many people today still carry those impressionable ideas. Vietnam Vets aren’t victims. They are those that answered the call honorably with valor. Thank you Chuck for your service!
Great story about a great sniper. At the time Mawhinney was a sniper he made some miraculous shots. Now with computer data and and improved scopes a 1000 yard shot is a piece of cake, but then was then and now is now. I never met Mawhinney when I was in the Corps, but he was a legend in his own time.
Simper Fi Marine and Rest in Peace, you’ve earned it. Hoo Raa!
I worked for a man who was a sniper. His patience and quietness were amazing to see. The mission is to save lives. "Chuck " was the very best at that mission.
Wonder if this man was, in any way, part of the background for Really Booth from "Bones". Both men saw the need of snipers, not as killers, but a person who was necessary to save our troops. Not a glorious job, but one that was very necessary.
Thank you, Tara, for another very interesting historical lesson. I'm sure if my husband was still alive he would have made some interesting comments since he was Marine in Vietnam.
Wonderful Marine! He saved so many lives by doing fearlessly what he knew how to do so well. Again Charles Mawhinney embodied those wonderful traits of humility and courage that is characteristic of all heroes.
My husband was in the Marines in Nam in 68. This led to an interesting conversation this AM. TY Tara
Thank you to your husband for his service 🇺🇸
He was a brave Marine, good at what he did, and saved innumerable lives. I want to see a movie on this Marine’s life. He is an inspiration. RIP.
So would i.
