Carroll was proof that independence rests in the heart, not in religious belief. As a member of the Holy Roman Church, the main persecutor of all who had the audacity to disagree with them, it was thought he would be a danger. But his zeal for independence was apart from his religious stance. We all can learn from this. Love for God transcends patriotism and in many cases drives it homeward. Search for God and live a patriot!
I read that Benjamin Franklin uttered a sentence during the Independence debates that goes like this : "We may hang separately or hang all together" . The Founding Fathers had everything to lose including their wealth and lives and yet they stuck to the vision of liberty. I have a lot of admiration for leaders like George washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. They were true patriots. I also think of many continental soldiers that suffered during the revolutionary war with hunger and disease and fought for the cause and gave their lives for a better future for their descendants. I often wonder that in today's United States and particularly with the new generation if we can muster the spirits that those folks demonstrated and have the same sense of patriotism and love of the country.
Freedom is a cause that transcends religious beliefs. It was said that freedom was first preached from the pulpits of America. The freedom in those messages was that of being free from the burden of sin as people gave themselves in a salvation experience with God. “ Whom the Son [of God] sets free is free indeed.” We are still in need of a great awakening and a spiritual revival at this time in history. I am seeing signs of that in churches and on college campuses. I am certain that Carroll would agree. He was a great patriot.
Charles Carroll is the subject of one of the two statues from Maryland in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the U.S. Capitol. Thought I’d share the link to my Blog post about him in my series about the subjects of statues in that collection. I’ll also be sharing this post at my Statue Page, Tara.
Very interesting commentary. All signers of the DOI had a special target placed on their heads but amazingly a majority survived the ensuing war that was fought to gain our Independence from Britain.
Another example of how religion and freedom, church and state, does both coexist and overlap. But it always takes that first individual to personify it. I never knew about this 'first Catholic'. Thanks Tara.
It’s always appreciated when you share stories about the patriots that signed the Declaration of Independence. It’s interesting to learn the history of Charles Carroll. Even though he was mistreated by fellow Americans he stayed true to his loyalty to America. It speaks well for him. Also the fact he changed his mind on owning slaves. Thank you for sharing his story, Tara.

Beautifully stated, Mark.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.”

Good to know this about the early beginnings. Glad he hung in there until properly recognized.

Although a movie, he was featured in 'National Treasure'. It showed him in a good light. Thanks Tara for spotlighting Mr. Carroll. A true patriot.
Very interesting, can’t recall hearing of him before, thank you Tara
