If everyone had his attitude about excellence and achievement, racism in America would cease to exist.

Thanks for sharing Tara. General James was from my hometown of Pensacola. We named a bridge after him. Sadly black Americans don’t truly know his story. A great American who once went toe to toe with Gaddafi.

So much respect for this man who is remembered for hard work and patriotism. Kudos to his mother who instilled important principles in her son. His perspective of leadership not being built upon race, but “total dedication and preparation” is excellent. If all Americans had this perspective we would never have the issues we are trying to deal with today. There’s a lot to learn from honorable men like Daniel “Chappie” James. Sad he died at such a young age.

His mother was inspirational. I wish we had more of that with our young men and women who lack parental guidance.

Thank you Tara for writing about another American Hero, Daniel "Chappie" James. Mr. James served and fought in 3 wars and retired a proud 4 star General, a true American Hero.

God bless General James and God bless all who have served or currently serve this great nation.

This quote speaks volumes to me as how to be a leader. I studied General James thoughout my career in the USAF.

James offered another perspective. “I think you are limiting yourself anytime you decide to be a black leader,” he told a reporter, “anytime you decide to be a white leader, anytime you decide to be a Catholic leader.” He added that leaders “make themselves through total dedication and preparation.”

Thanks Tara for highlighting a hero of mine.

So many great comments on an outstanding story. General James was not a four-star General because he was black; he was a four-star General because he was outstanding, a worker who excelled, and he pushed himself not to quit. Thank you, sir !

Marvelous sharing from a marvelous soul. He understood what it took to get the job done with no regard to color. More people need to look to his example.
