I've heard about the taking of the fort many times, but this was the first time I have ever heard about the involvement of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Men being involved.
Arnold must have been one very bombastic, even conceited character! More full of himself than patriotism if history was recorded correctly. In any case, the battle and resulting move of cannon was a total success. Long live the REPUBLIC!!!
A mere ten minutes to capture the fort. What a story. I made a WesPac cruise on the USS Ticonderoga, an aircraft carrier. Still, I had never heard this story. Thank you Tara.
The fortitude and determination of those men made it possible to do what they did. Allen’s response to the British captain’s question “by what authority?” is another lesson in the foundation of our great nation. His answer was first in the name of the great Jehovah and second the Continental Congress. God and country. Men of faith and steadfast patriots. Arnold on the other hand let his own ambitions and desire for place and power overtake him and it brought him down. It marred all the good he had done. It’s important to know our history and review it often. Thanks for your efforts in this regard, Tara.
I recently finished a book about the Mohawk Valley. Benedict Arnold was mentioned quite a bit. It seems he was quite a patriot, tactician and warrior. Such a shame how his ego and probably his loyalist wife leas him down the road to treason.
Thank you Tara. Benedict Arnold should have had the arrogance knocked out of him early on and, maybe he wouldn't have succumbed to the wiles of a woman, and become a traitor.
His earlier patriotism and military skills were put to good use at Ft Ticonderoga and in other battles. Unfortunately, Arnold became a traitor, reportedly because he didn't receive the acclaim he believed was due to him and because he became involved with a loyalist woman.
Benedict Arnold could undoubtedly have been one of the most important officers of the Continental Army had he channeled his temperament differently.
This is one of those instances where one thing just led to another. Who would have thought the consequences would have made made such a large impact on our fight for independence?
I was not familiar with this story, but it’s a good one - and well written (thanks, Tara !) with reader’s comments right on point ! Small skirmishes can later lead to great victories. It’s similar to circumstances in our lives . . . small, seemingly insignificant events in our lives can lead to unexpected blessings.
Small, but extremely advantageous! Arnold played a role, but it was Allen who ultimately led the way. Naturally, Arnold thought his idea was the original and with a commission went on to even greater things. To have withstood Arnold’s demand Allen himself had some of the same characteristic which drove Arnold to demand leadership. Arnold did like to do things which seemed to play to his fame such as the later push into Canada, but he had to have had some strong leadership qualities to have even achieved getting his men there.

Thank you MS Ross for "the rest of the story".

Always love the revolution history, thank you Tara
If only Tara was allowed to create the history curriculum for nationwide high school kids…

🇺🇲 Ticonderoga has been the coolest name for a a fort since I was a kid.
Never really knew why it was important, except it had a connection with Benedict Arnold.
Now I know, a small win here leads to a larger one later.
Also noticed Arnold's ego, which he curbed here, but would eventually turn this patriot into a traitor. 😕
Thanks for sharing, TR 🇺🇸

So much history wasn't in my High School courses. So glad you are sharing these now. I love reading about them all.
Thank you Tara.

Seems like the Green Mountain Boys had pegged Arnold for what he would become before anyone else. Thanks Tara for another great TDIH. 😊😉
Thank you, Tara.
It's hard to see him as the hero! But there's bound to be a lesson from this.... thanks Tara Ross 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
