Some really good changes can come out of tragedy. Sometimes we have to discern whether or not certain regulations are valuable. In this case the loss of life prompted necessary adjustments to ensure flying safety. It’s important to make good decisions based on past experience.
A really sad and unfortunate story. “Rough edges” after the disaster ? I think if I was a survivor I would try to live an exemplary life knowing that God had a purpose for me.
It is sad that too often it takes a foreseeable tragedy to occur before protocol or policy is changed. The foreseeability of it should have been sufficient.
John Madden was Cal Poly’s head football coach at that time. He was not on that flight as he was still taking care of other Cal Poly business and was scheduled to take a commercial flight later that day. As a result of that crash, John Madden swore never fly again. True to his word whenever he travelled he took a bus. As his popularity grew and became a Prime Celebrity as a commentator for the NFL he had a private bus that traveled across the nation to cover thousands of football games over the many years of his career. John Madden is now RIP along with his players that lost their lives on that fateful day. God Bless them all.
If the ATC can't see the plane through the fog, the tower should definitely ground the plane....

Thank you Tara. In the area of air safety, we have improved greatly since this 1960 crash.
A friend of mine is a retired commercial pilot. He said that they never paid him to fly the plane, they paid him to say "no."
I went to cal poly SLO in 1978. The event was very much remembered.
Did you go to MBHS?
It's sad that it took such a tragedy to enact those safeguards. No more plane crash stories this week please, I'm flying Friday. Tanks Tara!

Experience seems to be our strictest teacher.
