Brutal. This battle and war engaged brother and cousin against each other and for what? The American Civil War was anything but Civil. Thank you Tara for another history lesson.

The Civil Was was a sad commentary in America’s history. I pray it won’t ever happen again, but the way our country is so divided today, I fear we may see it once again.

That rear guard action was fought on a lost battlefield in what is now a very suburban area. A postage stamp battlefield park is there with memorials to Union Generals Isaac Stevens and Phil Kearny who were both killed there. The markers tell you roughly where amid all the cement pavement where each of them fell.

Pride goes before a fall. His poorly laid plans got so many killed. Pope had no idea how badly he misjudged until too late.

The wife and I spent 2009 touring VA and NC battlefields. Her family lost members in several of the battles near Manassas and Fredericksburg. I don't wish to see our country sink to another war against each other. Time will tell if new leaders will rise that put the nation, people and values first. Thanks Tara.

History is full of such…incomplete or incorrect intelligence caused poor leadership decisions. One of my relatives died at this battle and his body was never recovered. His Company was on far left wing in the woods when attacked by a superior force. They quickly withdrew and were never able to recover their casualties. Loveless Vanderburg was the brother of 3rd great grandfather from Concord, NC. They had another brother that died in camp earlier and one more that was wounded and then captured. He spent the rest of the war in a federal hospital.

🇺🇲 It is the oddest of names, for a war that pits countryman against countryman, because it is the very opposite of civil.

Another bloody battle of the "civil" war, the North had everything it needed to win but good generals. Jackson was one of the best, when he was lost the war turned badly for the South. So sad that so many died on both sides fighting for what they believed in.

Excellent write up. Pope must’ve thought, “oh sh—!” far too late. How many died because of his miscalculation. Excellent write up again thank you one note: wouldn’t the word Federal in this need to be capitalized as it is the name of the army?

Miscalculation on the part of Pope resulted in a huge loss of life. Being arrogant has its price and often it is at great cost to others. It’s terrible to think of brother fighting against brother. Families were deeply divided during this war. Hope we are not on the verge of another one. Pray we are more “civilized “. Only time will tell.
