The tactics used by "The Swamp Fox" were strange and unorthodox, causing an advantage for the outnumbered forces. This kept the British off balance. However, Bloody Banastre Tarleton who was sent to route out the Americans was feared due to his brutality. Please tell this story soon Tara. Thank you Tara for another history lesson.
The Swamp Fox must have been one of our country’s first Marines . . . or SEALS . . . or Green Berets ! He was tough and fearless. Each patriot we learn about played a key role in securing our independence. Each one was an important part of the puzzle, all necessary to achieve the objective of freedom. It’s easy for us to look back and see how important each patriot was, but at the time they were just doing their best. Great story . . . hope we get the next part of this soon. Thanks, Tara !
Actually, his sword rusted into its scabbard. He never had need for use of it. He was a wizened general who used his men well and judiciously. Being a local and growing up in the area was certainly in his favor.
I heard these stories as a kid when the state mandated a semester of South Carolina History. I believe we took it in middle school. I wonder if SC still requires its students to learn the state's history.
I have a copy of the official SC state public school history textbook published in 1940. It doesn’t mention Robert Smalls. Robert Smalls was born a slave in 1839. At age 14, His master hired him out to the owner of the steamship Planter in Charleston. In the early morning hours of May 13, 1862, Smalls (aged 22) freed himself, his crew, their families and 4 Confederate harbor defense cannons by commandeering the ship, and sailing it from the Confederate-controlled waters past Fort Sumter to the U.S. blockade that surrounded the harbor. Before leaving he said the next day he would be free or die. He was later elected to the United States Congress as a Republican. This Civil War Era hero should be in Statuary Hall.
The Swamp Fox is an interesting historical figure. I’ve seen the movies featuring his bold and cunning actions, but it’s nice to get the story without embellishments that are part of the movie industry. You always provide that for us, Tara.
The book "The Swamp Fox: How Francis Marion Saved the American Revolution" is a good read on him. He was sounds like he may have been an interesting man. Obviously, a big part of the amalgamated character Mel Gibson played in the patriot.
Being clever and unorthodox in the way the Swamp Fox chose to do battle against the British was perhaps the reason we won the Revolutionary War. Obviously the British along with their paid assassins from Germany were so convinced that numbers would win the day. Again American ingenuity trumped the British and won the war.
First learned of the Swamp Fox as a kid from the Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday nights even remember the song more than the movie.
I had actually forgotten about that, but now I remember watching that.

Like the Swamp Fox Tara, you are drawing us into a future lesson. Thanks for this one.

A True hero of this country’s founding.
🇺🇲 I've learned bits and pieces about the Swamp Fox, through the years, from Disney, and from The Patriot.
Nice to hear the real story of an amazing patriot! 🇺🇸
I recommend The Swamp Fox by John Oiler
I hope you continue this story through to the battle of the cow pens. Wonderful history!

I passed the the Historical Marker for The Battle of Blue Savannah on Highway 501 many times on my way to Myrtle Beach
Francis Marion led an anti-government militia
