I grew up in Baton Rouge. Governor Galvez is remembered there.

Thank you Tara. General/Governor Galvez was certainly an American Hero, although, he wasn't American. His military actions were extremely helpful in the cause of American freedom and independence.

Galvez died at the age of 40. It makes me wonder what would have happened had he lived another 30 or 40 years.

This is especially interesting to me because Galveston is a favorite place to visit. It’s a great day trip (we go often) or a few days get away. I never knew the story behind it. It’s amazing he was motivated to fight for America. It’s nice to learn about him. He certainly seemed to make a difference in the outcome.

The reasons that General Galvez took the actions that he did, prior an official declaration of war by Spain, against the British isn't provided. However he did, and was helped the Patriot cause significantly. With France already involved, and then Spain as well, the Britsh had far more to contend with, than just the United Colonies. It worked out rather well for the Americans.

Although New Orleans changed hands twice before a few decades passed, it’s importance remained crucial for the existence of the new nation which came to possess it. Galvez recognized and appreciated that so he responded to the best interest of Spain and the new American nation.

Tara Ross It's awesome to think about Texas (as part of Spain!) being involved in the American Révolution. It brings the connection to the Texas Révolution full circle!

Ima 👍, follow, and share all your posts! Keep (re)posting these great stories. I never get tire of them!

Not taught in Midwest unfortunately. Having lived in Galveston, learned about him. Would be a great addition to our American history books.

Never heard of Mr. Galvez before this account. He sure was very helpful to America. He had a real distaste for the British. All to our benefit. Many Thanks Tara for this bit of our History.
