Of course there's many reasons for the inefficiencies of the current postal system but in my opinion, bureaucracy is the major culprit.
Benjamin Franklin was one busy man. He had his hand in many diverse things but, hos overriding passion had to have been for American independence and freedom from British oppression.
Communication has always been the hallmark of a free people. We NEED to strive to keep communication open and free to all. This is the way to combat oppression in all its forms.
Like most government agencies the post office started off well with good intentions, was needed and run by an honorable man. Things change through the years and not always for the best. When we know how something started and how it has changed perhaps it is time to take action and make necessary improvements…maybe even including shutting down some agencies. Not sure the post office is one, but we know it needs some work. Good ending to this week’s posts, Tara. Have a good weekend.
I have experienced postal service in both rural small towns and heavy population centers. I have found the small rural offices to be very customer service oriented and efficient. Larger population centers, not so much. They seem more bureaucratic and less personal. While they like to say the Postal Service is not run by the government, Congress has a heavy influence on them. Maybe that’s their Achilles Heal.
The USPS has become one of the most inefficient agencies I have to deal with on occasion. #1: Their online services have been down for over two months. #2: This means I have to go into their office, and the service lines usually have at least 20 people in it to be helped. #3: knowing this they usually only have 2 staff members on duty to help people.
This probably is due to the fact that the employees are under the control of their union, therefore the staffing levels are set by government mandate. 🤬
The USPS still plays a vital role. Too bad it is so wrapped in problems that it is not efficient as it should be. But, we still use it and I personally find it convenient although not as reliable as it once was. It was and is an important component of our culture and country. Thanks, Tara Ross, for the historical recognition of Ben Franklin and the postal service!

This is yet another example how disappointed the Founding Fathers would be! 📫

Yes Tara it would be nice to get back to a streamline post office 🏤 bureaucratic tentacles can smother efficiency all too often! Enjoy your weekend.

The first and last time it turned a profit.
(Yes, I know it was the British version.)
A great beginning that has gone down hill the last 30 years. Many reasons one of which is technology.
Well done! Thank you!
Wonderful, again, I did not know this. Thank you for publishing it.
Thank you, Tara, I enjoy all your wonderful posts!!
Wow! 5 cents seems like a lot in 1847. I thought I remember it being 5 cents when I was growing up in the 1960’s.
As an old stamp collector, I am familiar with Ben Franklin's association with the Post Office. thanks
Thank you, Tara.
