Well, she knew that as gentlemen, this group would certainly be taken in by her unnerving actions. She did not try to seduce them as much as to convince them of her innocence of the crime and surprise through her reaction. She knew if she were perceived as a participant in the treason that she would be arrested and held - even possibly hung. It worked.
Oh the intrigue!!! You are so good at keeping our interest, Tara. If only all teachers would teach history this way the children would be captivated by the narrative and learning would be fun. I’ll bet those men, Washington included, felt pretty silly when they found out how Peggy Arnold fooled them. Looking forward to the next installment.
Oh my. Tara, you certainly know how to play to the crowd and string out the finale.
I can imagine why the leaders of the Revolutionary forces were duped by Ms. Arnold. She must have been quite the actress. I hope that Peggy Arnold gets her due when Washington finds out that he was fooled by her.
Not unlike today where a patriot, rationalizing his treachery with the idea that others were getting the glory and honors he deserved, flips and takes up the dark side. In this case, for the $$. ;-(
Once Arnold's treachery was discovered, it HAD to have reverberations throughout the entire Patriot cause! One can only imagine how many were giving side long glances at their peers.
The story unfolded, with each conspirator playing their part. The saddest being Arnold, considering he was never totally trusted by the British, either.
Shippen and Arnold were a recipe for disaster. She was a smart, beautiful loyalist and master manipulator. He a brilliant field general with a large, and offended ego. What could go wrong?
Maybe my second favorite "larger than life" character of the Revolution. (GW always has to be #1!!) Arnold's not some ancient cardboard historical figure. Swashbuckling patriot (Canada, Ticonderoga, Valcour, Saratoga), with roaring passions, a big and bruised ego, brilliant military mind... and traitor who after West Point, led enemy raids against his own people. Always appreciate your Rev War stories Tara!
Love it! Great post - especially the minutiae about Peggy Arnold - scantily clad and in distress..... not suspected because “boys will be boys!”😂😂😂

Another sad story of treason. One of the worst as well as the first great act by a Washington “insider” who had Washington’s trust.

Thank you Tara.
Yes that would be interesting to find out how she was treated after her husband was captured. Stay tuned?
That woman knew what she was doing! 😆 🤣 😂
Very interesting account of Arnold's treachery. Eagerly await the next episode.

And we stay tuned to ending of this lesson.
That is an incredible story. I can picture it in my mind. Peggy was quite the woman.
