Thank you for this information!! My 5th great grandfather, Capt. Thomas Abell fought in this battle in his hometown of Bennington. My 4th GG, Henry Abell was 6 months old at the time and they lived very close to the battle site. I was fortunate to visit Bennington and the battle site a few years ago. Just down the road is the church that Thomas helped to build, where I was able to sit in the pew that he purchased for his family's use. What an honor for me to be able to be there!!
I love the grit and determination for the cause of freedom as evidenced by General Starks reported comment: “Tonight our flag floats over yonder hill or Molly Stark sleeps a widow.” 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Such a battle it must have been. And to have won that one, and then Saratoga afterwards must have done much for the morale of the "former" colonies resistance, and maybe at just the right time!
Hooray for the rag-tag American forces. The victory at the battle of Bennington was an important moral booster for the American forces and the American people.
Hear Hear! We’re the shouts of joy as the news of this victory was told by fellow patriots as they raised their mugs of beer in the taverns and more volunteers joins in the fight against the tyranny of King George and his Red Coats. Of course I am not a historian like Tara Ross so this commentary is just my imagination.
US History in both high school and college and I don’t remember ever hearing about this battle - Saratoga for sure, but not this very important precursor to that important victory. Thanks for a great post today, Tara!
Brigadier General John Stark knew how to strategize to have the greatest leverage resulting in victory. British General John Burgoyne underestimated what he was going up against. The two different approaches by those leaders made a huge difference in the outcome. Thankfully the end result was in the Americans favor and France joined as allies for the cause of freedom.
