The unknown battle is a good description of Attu. In my 73 years I have never heard this story. What a tragedy that is especially to the 3,000 injured and the 549 KIA.
Thank you Tara for sharing this story in their memories.
I have seen specials on this battle. Talk about the fog of war describes it well, as well as a young American of Japanese ancestry that was caught up in the war while visiting Japan and drafted into their army. He perished on Attu. The diary and his bible was found and later returned to his family.
Thanks Tara for another seldom know battle in the Pacific theater. This fight had a lot of causalities but with the upcoming battles it was soon forgtten. Americans need to remember freedom is never free.
I remember my Aunt telling me about this battle. She was a radio operator instructor and was aware of the battle. The weather almost won but thankful our warriors overcame and persevered. Thank you Tara for the details.
Yes, we need to recognize and remember the battle of Attu and the forgotten heroes who died or survived fighting on US North American soil during WW2.
I don't believe that I knew of the banzai charge and I wasn't aware that so many American fighting men were killed or wounded fighting to regain control of this island. Thank you Tara.
I thank God for all who served and all who died or were injured fighting for this great nation.
Surprised that when so much attention was being paid to the Pacific Coast after Pearl Harbor that the Japanese were able to occupy those islands. Almost seems as if they were an afterthought. Many lessons learned in the process.
My research reveals another reason for the Japanese secured 2 of these Aleutian islands...they seized them to act as a " redirect" from the real battle against America...their attempted attack on Midway...
It is sad how much blood has been spilled to secure real estate, and ultimately our freedom. We must never forget, never forget, never forget . . . and always honor the fallen.

My dad was on a D.E. in that battle. He had relayed to me what he had seen and how much it affected his mental state when he saw the aftermath. 🙏🏻🇺🇸
Thank you, Tara, for this little known story!
We must never forget all those who gave their lives for the Freedom our nation stands for!
There is a quiet nobility in writing about the fallen in forgotten battles….

This is the best story of enemy 🍍 🍍 🍍 yet!
I had never heard of this battle! Thank you for the post! Another did you know from Tara Ross! 😀
Thank you Tara. I had never heard of this battle so I learned something today. This proves once again that we are never to old to learn.
Tara.

I’ve heard of this battle several times over the years. War as hell. It always has been and it always will be. It will also always be necessary.
🇺🇲 Lest we forget! 🇺🇸
Thanks, TR!
