It's worth repeating Tara! Archie Van Winkle just wouldn't give up, although he nearly died, he kept his men in the fight. And true to MOH standards, he felt that many others had done just as much as he did. He's probably right, but his actions were documented and his bravery was recognized. Thank you for your heroic actions Colonel Van Winkle. God bless you and all who serve or have served.

Thank you Tara.

Ssgt Van Winkle did what was needed to be done and then did more than any amount of training can teach a man to exceed the over and above the top of what is expected. His heroic actions was awarded not only the MOH but also Silver Bar of a Lieutenant. Simper Fi Marine.

It is actions like this that push his fellow soldiers to do their best as well. His actions spurred them on to turn the tide of that battle. Kudos to the the sergeant for sticking with his troops and making it happen.

I am amazed at all of the Medal of Honor recipients. Every one of them does not feel like they did anything special and they just did what they had to do. In truth, these were ordinary people doing extraordinary feats under difficult, life-threatening circumstances. God placed each individual in the right place and the right time . . . ultimately, the choice was up to them. These recipients were brave beyond the norm.

Oh boy a bonus MOH story. Does mean it's MOH week? That would be great since it's my birthday week.

Repeats are always good. Archie Van Winkle’s heroic actions are worth retelling. It’s unbelievable how strong and courageous he was in spite of such terrible wounds and with the same humble demeanor about it all. Cute account of the nurses concern with sanitizing the medal before it was put on the baby.
