Fortunes, misfortunes, and misplaced people… it was a troubled time and one not everyone survived but it truly gave foresight to that which formed a new nation. History is never clean or uncontested but it always is a lesson learned if one cares to cherish its good and its mistakes without self righteous indignation.
It is most unfortunate that an ostensibly human and practical act of paying the “tea tax” would imperil the ship’s owner through mob action and ultimately drive him and his family from our shores. Alas, such is the vindictive nature of mob action through the ages. And, quite frankly, I had no idea such an event occurred in Annapolis.
Wow. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. Anthony Stewart had very little choice but to comply with both paying the tax and burning his ship. That combined action had to be financially devastating to him.
The mob forced his hand but I don't understand how that forced his loyalty to the British crown.
So, I say, terrible unfortunate events caused the Stewart family financial hardship but not disloyalty to the Patriot cause and good riddance Anthony Stewart.
Thank you Tara, for this bit of history that I knew nothing about! I have to feel sad for Stewart who was definitely caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place. It was certainly a difficult time for everyone leading up to the founding of our country.
the dcp was also my excuse to have to quit without being on her bad side cause so many people have been quitting the past few weeks because of her lolz. Are there any real sports betting geeks? I have some questions about this crypto betting platform - https://tinyurl.com/3fbhv4ts
It was a sad event brought on by mob rule. This provides a great example of the disadvantage of a pure democracy without the restraint a republic offers. I doubt a captain in that age would be totally blind as to what was loaded aboard his ship.
Mob mentality sadly often ignores facts and wisdom. Grew up in MD and never heard about this. Shameful

Betsy Tara Ross the ship would be destroyed anyway right? He did well to handle it!
Thank you very much
Mob mentality, then, or now is never good.
Thanks for a story I'd not heard before.

Glad that I can read via sub stack and not depend upon Facebook
Thank you Tara
News to me. Great story and you are correct saying the Annapolis seems to be an irate mob
Uncivilized to say the least.

Thank you, Tara.
