Bates and Ward never met each other. And neither of them made much money on the song. Instead, the result of their accidental partnership has simply been a great gift to the country.
A song of tradition though it is not a physical monument is a monument to it's subject. I'm thankful for patriotic songs of tradition that promote our tradition and heritage that cannot be defaced or torn down.
