Alaska, a "sucked orange". I don't know what the final purchase price would be in today's money, but it would be a bargain! I would guess that the Russians are sorry that they disposed of Alaska at any price.
The natural resources of Alaska are worth so much more than we paid but the beauty of this immense state makes a very valuable addition to the United States.
Of course, being old, I clearly remember the addition of Alaska and Hawaii as our 49th and 50th states. Thank you Tara.
The only folly that I perceive from that purchase was that Seward was a bit too eager and paid more than he/we might have gotten the Alaskan territory for. But, we have it, and that has turned out to be a good thing.
Proven to be the best deal for USA. Think about how everything would have been impacted if Russia had owned land on this continent.

Thank you Dr. Ross for this interesting story about the purchase of Alaska. I had heard the term Seward's folly, quite a long time ago.
I appreciate all research and time spent by you in putting these days in history together.
Thanks Tara I'd say it was a bargain of a deal 😉!
Thank you, Tara.
Wonder what the Russians did with all that money?
An interesting negotiation. I find no fault with Seward.

Thanks for the additional information on this beyond the tired old "folly" story we were always given.
Thanks Tara.
And “Sewards Folly” became a huge asset!
Thank you Tara
Awesome!
