Amazing feat (feet?)!!! His efforts saved so many. Yet another of those forgotten, seldom told stories worth repeating.

More great history many of us never knew about. This one underscores what most of your stories convey .. the power and significance that one man or one woman can bring to overcome mortal challenges, and the selfless drive to save one’s community affirming our connection to the divine.

I realized as I read that I’ve read this story before in another telling. I have ancestors who were living in the Mohawk Valley in this period and I have been trying to flesh out their story reading various sources and accounts. This also is the possible source for the sequence in John Ford’s film of the novel Drums Along the Mohawk when the settler portrayed by Henry Fonda agrees to try and get help for the besieged settlers fort and outruns and outfights several Indian pursuers, bringing a relief column of soldiers back to the fort almost literally just in time.

I had no idea. What a man who cared so much about his fellow citizens to do this.

Unbelievable stamina and motivation to warn others so they could get to safety. We don’t hear about Adam Helmer and his Mohawk Valley run very much. Thanks for bringing his story to our attention.

How many of us today in our early adulthood could do the same? It gives hope, though, for what the American could do if the price was worth it.

I think "the Pheidippides of the American Revolution" is a more accurate moniker, but it's a mouthful! 😉

Where was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - or some other poet? If he had heard about Helmet - we'd surely know it. 😏
