Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents of this country. His task was daunting but his resolve and responsibility was unshakable. My favorite quote of him has always been part of his 2nd inaugural address: “ With malice toward none with charity for all with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations."
Lincoln was an outstanding president and went up against great odds. He did so much good for the country. I am not a fan of Presidents Day. Not all presidents are equal. We had some great ones, but we’ve also had some duds too. They have all had an impact on our nation for better or worse. Washington and Lincoln should both be honored apart from all other presidents. They left wonderful legacies. We can learn from their presidencies. Definitely they both had a positive impact on our country.
I whole-heartedly agree about the Washington's Birthday holiday, routinely denigrated as "President's Day". And I concur that His birthday observation and Lincoln's, shouldn't be combined. We should go back to the way they used to be observed.
When I was a young boy, I would get books on Lincoln from the library for my immigrant grandmother from Austria to read. She loved Lincoln. He taught her how to read English. She arrived in America when she was in her 60’s. She loved America!🇺🇸
Truly a remarkable man, his life was full of failures and success. He endured the loss of children, the civil war, the early losses but his determination to save the Republic persevered. It's remarkable at that time in our history with all in infighting and "deep state" against him he held out and won!!!
Abraham Lincoln was a great POTUS. Yes he also won by a landslide. But was this in a torn Country. Had those 7 states not seceded would perhaps a different opponent won the election? This was perhaps another case of Devine Intervention in our young Country. Regardless, the Civil war was fought, Slavery was abolished, and our Nation began the struggle to become One Nation, Undivided once again. Unfortunately our great Leader was stolen from us by an assassin's bullet.
In last night's Fox News commentary, the statement was made that D. J. Trump was the most maligned and set upon presidential candidate in our nation's history, but IMO, he was 2nd to Lincoln. Remember what happened when Lincoln won the election? 7 states seceded and dragged us into a bloody civil war, one that took thousands of lives of our best, one that led to decades of strife that followed cessation of hostilities. Then there's the whole (successful) assassination thing! We have much to remember, more to fill in the crevices of our thinking. Most of all, though, we NEED to praise God for His leading, for His guiding hand. We NEED to keep our government utmost in our prayers, no matter who is "in charge."
One of our greatest Presidents, in my opinion. Abraham Lincoln was a most unlikely man to win the Presidency. Certainly, he wouldn't likely win in today's political climate but he was there when the nation needed him. His leadership and tenacity reconnected our young nation and served to begin healing some terrible wounds caused by the issue of slavery.
Much like the divided country of the 1850s-1860s, we are nearly as polarized. Not by slavery but by the political and sociatal issues. Can Donald Trump begin to heal us? I certainly hope so.
One cannot help, but admire the man Lincoln. From a very rough and tumble lifestyle to that of occupying the presidential mansion is an incredible step that few could accomplish. He could bare knuckle fight, wrestle, swing an axe all day, lug freight, as well as debate, give a speech, and express himself eloquently. It was an incredible task to become president for such a man and his day, and would be nearly impossible in this day as well. His accomplishments are many the impact on America is second to none other than George Washington. Through determination and strong will he managed to hold the union together as one nation. He may not have him the highest opinion of the capabilities of those from African Heritage, but he knew slavery was wrong and should be contained. I’m sure if he had lived, his opinion of the one time enslaved populous would have changed. But his opinion was highly shared at that time although they were gravely mistaken. Thank God that legal slavery was ended in our nation, but now we need to end the illegal slave trade fed by human trafficking. May God help us.
Personally, Lincoln was a remarkable man. He was thrust into an almost impossible position with the States that seceded. I believe he erred greatly in sending troups into Virginia, thus cementing that State's decision to also secede. He bears, I think, the responsibility for 600,000 unnecessary deaths of Americans, which is a horrific blemish on his record.
Personally, I take those deaths to be more of a judgment on the USA for not appropriately dealing with slavery when they had an opportunity. Why? My religious upbringing and Bible study. “Do not be deceived. God is not mocked. Whatever a man sows, that he will reap.”

Lincoln also failed to get an appointment to the United States Land Office in 1849. However, Lincoln's failures deepened his resolve and he went on to be elected President in 1860.

I just finished the biography of A Lincoln. Learned a ton about him that I never knew. He was truly one of our greatest Presidents.
