The injury required hospitalization, and he was released it was just a few days before his Sept. 26 televised debate with John F Kennedy. When Nixon arrived for the debate, he looked ill, and the vice president then re-injured his knee as he entered the TV station. But he refused to call off the debate.
Nixon also refused to wear stage makeup (Kennedy did to at first, but then had his team do it) and the result was that Kennedy looked and sounded good on television, while Nixon looked pale and tired, with a five o’clock shadow beard.
The next day, polls showed Kennedy had become the slight favorite in the general election, and he defeated Nixon by one of the narrowest margins in history that November. Before the debate, Nixon led by six percentage points in the national polls.
People who listened to the debate on radio thought Nixon won the debate - those watching on tv gave the edge to Kennedy. Oh and very doubtful if Kennedy would have won Illinois (and the presidency) without the Daly machine in Chicago.
Not sure it's correct that radio listeners tipped to Nixon and TV viewers tipped to Kennedy.
The Nixon radio victory emerged in only a single poll conducted by Sindlinger and Company, and other polling data suggests Sindlinger’s finding is likely the result of a Republican bias in the sample and not a mass defection of Democrats swayed by Nixon’s substantive arguments.
Daley in Illinois and Johnson in Texas carried the day :)
1) My first guess would have been Bob Dole, but that would have been wrong because “Bob Dole’s not going to do that!” LOL
2) William McKinley being from Columbus, Ohio I should have known that, but I confess, I looked it up. I’m sure we learned in grade school Ohio history that is how we got the state flower. I had forgotten that!
1) That would be Richard Nixon!
