1) Calvin Coolidge. He was vacationing on his family farm in Plymouth VT. His father who was a Justice of the Peace swore him in. Teddy Roosevelt was vacationing on Lake Champlain when McKinley was shot, he traveled to Buffalo. When it appeared McKinley was stable it was decided that TR should continue his vacation as to not cause more alarm. He returned to the Adirondacks, and was climbing Mt Marcy when word came of McKinley's worsening condition. TR returned to the lodge and made a midnight ride to the Train Station in North Creek. He was there when he learned of McKinley's passing.

3) No. Honorable mentions have to go to John Quincey Adams who served in the Senate, House, Secretary of State, Ambassador, and President, and to Taft who served as Secretary of War, Solicitor General, Court of Appeals Justice, Chief Justice, Territorial Governor, and President.
