Hauge rushed out into the open, throwing hand grenades at the Japanese guns as he went. He he was already severely wounded by the time he took out the first gun—but he kept going.
Risking and giving his life so that others might live. You just can’t top it. The free American makes a mighty warrior. May Louis J. Hague rest in peace knowing his sacrifice was not in vain and that a humble group of Americans still remember him because of the likes of Tara Ross bringing them remembrance.
God bless Louis J. Hauge Jr. for his selfless actions that day in Okinawa and God bless all who put on a uniform to serve and perhaps die for this great nation.
Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday. We have so many heroes to thank.
Thank God there are those who step into harms way for the good of others, be they Soldier, Sailor, Marine, Law Enforcement or Citizen who know they can make a difference, knowing that they will not survive. We are better for them, even though they pay the ultimate price in doing so. Thank You Tara for reminding us of the good, especially in light of the mass shooting that happen far to often these days.
I was struck by the date of his action and the end of the war. A few more months of survival and he would have gone home. But his actions contributed to the defeat of the Japanese at Okinawa that helped lead to the Japanese surrender and saved others who could return home safely. A young hero and member of the greatest generation.
Another brave and hardy soul who defied death and kept his fellows alive by sacrificing himself. There simply is no greater gift. Our historians should always keep these names in front of us so we might be aware of their sacrifices.
This young man knew what he was throwing himself into and did it anyway!
He didn’t do it for himself but for his partners in battle! Thank God we had these people in the battle for freedom for ourselves and others around the world!
Thank you, Tara, for this story I had not heard of before!
Great story-well written as always. Your stories of brave selfless soldiers make me proud to be a patriot. They also make me wonder when our great country will collapse because of greed.
I often wonder where such bravery comes from, in the hearts of such [young men] of our service men and women that have volunteered to stand guard over this nation.
My greatest hope is that, God did not throw away the mold that He used to create such honorable men as Louis Hague, Jr. We will need them tomorrow and into the future.
It always amazes me how young many of these Medal of Honor winners were, just boys. I still want to believe that the young men of today can be just as heroic. I just don’t know. These men truly were the greatest generation. The Viet Nam vets had the hero’s from WW 2 and Korea as examples. Are Americans young men and women ready?

I don't have proper words to express how fortunate we are to have had such brave men as Louis Hague Jr. May he be resting in Peace

Unbelievable! A dogged determination to eliminate the threat, without a thought of personal injury or death!
