Thank you Tara. As a Navy Corpsman during the Vietnam War, I appreciate this story about the bravery and physical closeness to the action that these noncombatants endured during WW2. Without the nurses and other medical personnel being close to the action, many more warriors would have died or have endured significantly increased time away from the front. God bless the Greatest Generation and all who have served or currently serve this great nation.
I was in Vietnam. Every nurse who ever served in a combat situation is, indeed, a Real Hero (Heroine)! Thank you, Tara Ross, for helping us remember their dedication and service.
🇺🇲 The word that best describes nurses everywhere is Angel.
The quote that tells us about nurses at war is "We all cry in private. But not in front of the boys. Never in front of the boys" Lt. June Wandrey Mann.
Nurses in general are awesome. Those who are military nurses take it to a whole new level of awesomeness. I have the privilege of working with US Navy nurses for five years and consider it to be a highlight of my lifetime. Several of these were Vietnam veterans. I have a cousin who was a nurse in the Air Force that made Brigadier General. She was one of the best nurses that I have ever known. Thank you for this story that reflects their importance in American history.
My mother's best friend's sister was one of these nurses. She bought me a baby hat (I was born in 1945) in Italy. After she came home she spent time in and out of VA psychiatric hospitals when she was home she lived with her mother. She spent over 20 years of the end of her life in one.
Anyone interested in a historical fiction novel of the WACs, the Monuments Men, and the war over art during WWII, check out Laura Morelli's "The Last Masterpiece." I enjoyed it.
The brave military nurses who served with kindness, compassion and a strong resolve to take good care of the wounded men endured more than can ever be expressed. Their contributions were among the greatest. They saw horrible things, but looked at their responsibility as a high honor. I’m sure many struggled when they returned home to live a normal life. Always appreciate the posts about the women who served, Tara.
Thanks Tara for this important history of what the women of the greatest generation did in time of war. Some stayed home and worked in factories to produce arms and ammunition others like these brave nurses went to the war itself. Brave indeed!!!
The Nurses I'm sure gave much needed morale in battle. A little bit of human kindness goes a long way. Thank you Tara for another great TDIH. 😊
The bit about June Wandry comforting the soldier as he died is a great lesson for war, as well as life.

Thanks, TR, lest we forget 🇺🇸

Wow! Just... Wow!
There's some excellent histories out there on the Allies in Italy.
Highly recommended is "Italy's Sorrow: A Year of War, 1944-1945" by James Holland.
By turns riveting and brutal; and at times nightmarish
Thank you, Tara, for this story of the heroic nurses who served and are serving their nation and the wounded during our nation’s wars!
Freedom is not free and never has been!
