Surely, Prescott and Gridley knew the difference between Breed Hill and Bunker Hill. I chose to believe that Prescott wanted the battle and he built the defensive fortress in the face of the British. He certainly achieved the fight and he showed the British that the Americans were up to the task.

There were these among the British who said that taking a few more hills would likely destroy the remainder of their force in Boston. Prescott was an interesting man, and certainly an inspiration to his men on more than this occasion. Many of the Rebels had wanted a fight and Bunker Hill would not have precipitated the fight as well as Breeds Hill. I personally think that was what Prescott desired and he purposely chose the position.
The Patriots were on the losing end of many battles during the Revolutionary War. The key was General Washington realized the British were the ones that needed to win. The Patriots just needed to not lose the war. The British won many if not most of the battles and yet they lost the war.
A brave stand for an army not yet fully formed, the British couldn't afford many more victories t that cost! We lost brave men that day but showed we could fight!!
Our history and the men and women who were vitally involved in making it are inspiring and uplifting. They were clear eyed in their goals and the reasons for pursuing them. Some parts of history can only be guessed at from what we know. As others have said it may be that Prescott purposely chose Breed Hill. Bunker Hill is better known, but Breed Hill is not less important in the fight for freedom.
