When you think of Valley Forge, you probably think of half-clothed and starving men, suffering through a long (long!) winter, barely surviving. But Valley Forge was so much more than that.
I absolutely love your daily history lessons, Tara! (I believe that they are probably way more important than even you might realize! 😊 )
What I was surprised by the most in today's post was to see that George Washington had a credibility problem with Congress - that he even had critics in Congress! So many accounts show how revered Washington was across the country.
I guess that phenomenon has been part of our U.S. experience since even before Day One of our federal government.
This is one of those stories that (as you have done) bears repeating. There was discouragement to be sure, but there was also hope of betterment. The positive result from Congress and the arrival of Baron Von Steuben were truly God-sent. While a difficult winter, the freedom fighters worked their way through it all and came out ready for the next year.
A lesson of growing more competent as an army, becoming a team helping each other survive, a leader spending time with his army and living the survival lifestyle with them. Come Spring they must have emerged lean and a with a bit meaner edge as a fighting force. Perhaps as we now face a winter that might just make us look closer at what we must do to prevail, we might emerge willing to make wrong right and put a stop to what has come upon us as a nation. Lean and mean might not be such a bad thing. It is after all hard men and women who say “ enough” and force change. History has shown us that lesson time and again. Prevail or perish is a lesson we should ll know full well.
Betsy Tara Ross 🇺🇸 Washington and his men made the most of a bad situation with a good attitude and positive work ethic, and were victorious as a result im sure there's a lesson about Gumption or something in there somewhere! 😉
I visited Valley Forge 18 years ago. It was very interesting, walking through the camp and the home where Washington lived..an undisciplined, untrained army went into winter quarters, and came out an army. Necessary in order to succeed against the British.
I've been to Valley Forge and seen the timber huts his soldiers built. They are a real testament to the resourcefulness of his troops. Keeping warm and fed must have been a full time job, as Washington knew: idle hands can mutiny. Bless their memories.
The British were the enemy but so were the elements. Valley Forge was a key battle and victory for the freedom fighters albeit not with bullets and swords but with sharp minds and strength of fortitude and perseverance.

Every American should know this story of perseverance and determination, patriotism and allegiance to the common goal of becoming free men.
Valley Forge was the birthplace of a trained Army, ready to win the war for freedom and independence. Thank you Tara.

Excellent representation. The training culminated in the publication of "REGULATIONS FOR THE ORDER AND DISCIPLINE OF THE TROOPS OF THE UNITED STATES."
A story that needs to be told...lest we forget.
Thank you!
Thank you Tara for setting the record straight! Your posts are so informative and I look forward to reading them daily!
