The bravery of this man, as we have seen in others, is astounding. Putting the lives of his men above his own. How sad to think there was even a question whether he should receive the Medal of Honor. It’s terrible that the there was a trend of awarding the lesser cross at that time. Glad they made it right finally. It takes pressure sometimes to make those in authority do the correct thing.
It is so appropriate for Sgt Atkins to receive the MOH. Somehow it does not seem enough of an award, but the resistance in conferring this shows just how highly it is recognized. And Sgt Atkins so deserves it. I pray that many more soldiers will be of the same character so that we have a strong Army.
SSgt. Aitkins is another example of choosing to serve, when he didn't have to, choosing to potentially be on the front lines (infantry), and giving his own life for his fellows even at the cost of his own life.
May his memory be preserved for his dedication to his fellows and the lives that he saved.
RIP, Sgt Atkins, your service was not in vain. Saving your fellow warriors was your greatest service.

This is gut-wrenching, but these are the type of men I want defending my country!
It is so sad to lose our brave soldiers in this tragic way but a tribute to his bravery and unselfishness!
God bless Travis Atkins for his sacrifice as he made the decision to save his men rather than himself.
The MOH, as rare and impressive as it is, seems like it's not enough.
SSgt Akins was so patriotic that he reenlisted to go back into the action, although it would cost him his life. Thank you Tara for another MOH Monday.
This is the type of hero that the MOH was created for originally.
“He’d paid his dues but wanted to go back in” and by doing so “he gave up his life so his men could live”!
Another story of selflessness that I had never heard of before!
Thank you,Tara, for another great story of a serviceman giving his life for his fellow servicemen!
Happy to hear the review and upgrade were approved. An awesome hero and leader. RIP Sgt. Atkins.

Such a brave man was Sgt. Atkins to sacrifice his life for his fellow Soldiers. Certainly deserving of the MOH.
