“I don’t think my name is likely to be worth much in the toy bear business,” Roosevelt reportedly replied, “but you are welcome to use it. I wish you great luck with your toy bear business.”
I have always enjoyed this story. Thank you Tara. Of course, President Teddy Roosevelt wouldn't think it decent sportsmanship to dispatch an animal that wasn't a fair hunt. I don't know any hunters who would.
But the founders of the Ideal toy company saw the potential of a toy Teddy bear. I wonder how many Teddy bears have been made in the intervening 120 years
Fun to speculate how Roosevelts fellow hunters that day corralled that bear. Leave it to sportsman conjecture about the "one that got away". They make for great stories around the campfire.
The fact that you can continue to provide stories of historical significance ( or not, in the case of Teddy!) is wonderful. Keep on informing and enlightening us with the backstories of History. It is a highpoint in my day.
I had no idea this is where Teddy Bears came from. But like many before me, I had one as a child named Jingles (he had a jingle bell in one of his ears and his ears were worn "bare" from stroking them!) Thanks for this bit of Americana, Tara!
Thank you for a lighter point in politics!!😊 It really is amazing that something so simple could become so iconic, isn't it?!? Thanks for today's lesson Tara 🇺🇸 👍🇺🇸
Love this story! What child growing up in America didn’t have or has a teddy bear? I’ve had a number of them over the years. So have my children and grandchildren. Great, uplifting story. Thanks, Tara!
Love this story and love my Teddy bear, too!

This is one of the best wholly American stories. I’ll always love hearing it retold. Thank you.
Thank you!
