I'm told it's better to ask forgiveness than permission. It's one of the biggest land deals in American history though, along with Seward's Folly. The expansion of the Southwest was spoils of war, for those keeping score.

Yes, of course Robert Livingston and Mr. Monroe did the right thing in obligation this new country to acquire the Louisiana purchase for $15 million dollars. It nearly doubled the land mass of the United States and it gave access all the way to the Mississippi River. Did the Senate act lawfully by ratifying the purchase without a Constitutional Amendment? I say yes.

Thank you Tara for bringing a somewhat lesser founder to our attention. Robert Livingston should be remembered as a very active member of our founding fathers and his accomplishments in the name of the United States are significant.
