We came back heroes, but mostly we were just scared,” he concluded. “But we knew what we were fighting about. We knew we were fighting for America.”

Whether they came home or are buried in Europe, they were all heroes.

The best purpose: fighting for our country. Gerstung is not only a hero, but an exemplary patriot. We’ve seen patriotism diminish especially over the last several years. It makes a big difference in those who serve in our military. Everyone of the Medal of Honor recipients were patriots. They loved their country and fellow countrymen. It moved them to do unthinkable things. Gerstung is another example of that. So thankful for men and women with strong and honorable characters.

I agree wholeheartedly with you about our diminishing Patriotism. I think we as citizens have voted for people that can raise the most money and advertise their egotism best for the past 40 years rather than researching their true character and their Patriotism. SAD!

Unfortunately, this is true. We see it happening in pretty much every politician’s campaign.

True courage and willingness to face his fear, still "doing his job" through it all. His actions saved many. Thanks, Tara, for a double CMH this week!

I agree with you Tara. "God bless this great country of ours." Robert E. Gerstung single handedly fought off the Germans for many hours while protecting American Infantry at the Battle of the Bulge. What an amazing hero who was just doing his job, and fighting for the continued freedom of his country. Thank you Tara.

I enjoy your weekly descriptions of heroes in our midst. They inspire me as regular people who exceed expectations in defense of others. We need more of these examples in our lives. I hope more people subscribe and read your articles.

One of the toughest battles of WWII. The men who did awesome unbelievable feats to save many and outlast a determined enemy. Robert E. Gerstung was in the top 10% of the many stories I have read. "One Man Army" or as the story title says "One Man Fortress". God bless them all and those who follow them one step at a time.
