Great summary of a truely horrible battle. If anyone wants to learn more I highly recommend "With The Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge. He was a private in the action and his book was very respected by the men who fought there. Thanks Tara.

War is truly hell on earth. Those Marines were unbelievable and it wasn’t just bullets that won the war. It was the fighting spirit and tenacity of the U.S. serviceman. Thank you to our service people around the globe, then, and now.

My father, a young Lieutenant with the 1st Marine regiment, landed on Peleliu September-15, 1944. His commanding officer was killed on the beach. As an intelligence officer he then reported directly to Col. (Chesty) Puller.

Dad recalled landing on the beach with body parts, intestines, and blood splattered over his face and uniform. Peleliu was hell on earth.

He survived to fight on Okinawa.

On September 15, 1950 he landed at Inchon eventually ending up at the Chosin Reservoir, the Marines campaign there is historic.

I only saw him weep twice, when he told me my grandmother had died and when he told me he had finished a book that said the Peleliu assault was unnecessary.

May God bless the United States Marine Corps.

The battle of the island of Peleliu was horrific. The Japanese were very tough warriors and they had the advantage. Americans prevailed, but at a terrible cost in death. Thank you Tara and thank God for the Greatest Generation whose tenacity saved the day. God bless all who served or are currently serving this great nation.

Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz famously said that, “Uncommon Valor was a common virtue,” among those who are fighting for a freedom to live, just another hour.

(Most) of them will react according to the dangers that come into their lives, on the battle fields or in peace time. They just want to serve to the best of their abilities and training that they have received.

Lord, give our military men and women, a hedge of protection and give them peace in whatever they are doing today, in foreign lands. Give their leaders and commanders wisdom, far beyond their natural selves.
